Alphabet Commits $15bn for Constructing AI Data Hub in the Indian Subcontinent

Alphabet, Google's holding company the Alphabet conglomerate plans to commit fifteen billion dollars to establish an AI data hub in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

This center, that is planned in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam, will become a part of Google's international system of AI centres spread across twelve different countries.

"This represents the biggest artificial intelligence center that we plan to invest in anywhere in the world, outside of the United States of America," Thomas Kurien said at an gathering in capital Delhi this Tuesday, mentioning that the investment will be spread throughout the next half-decade.

The announcement occurs when President Trump of the United States has been asking American companies to prioritise domestic investment.

India's Increasing Significance in AI Infrastructure

The nation has risen as a major hub for AI data centers. The nation's inexpensive data services and rapidly growing internet user base have made it a hub for AI and cloud growth for technology leaders.

"The facility will deliver our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in the nation, enhancing AI innovation and promoting progress throughout the nation," stated Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.

Specifics of the Project

An official contract to finalise the initiative is scheduled for signing soon, local government officials said.

"It is a major step forward for the digital progression of our state, technological innovation, and worldwide position," said the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.

This initiative will integrate computing and artificial intelligence facilities with renewable energy systems and an enhanced optical fiber network.

Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision

The project is included in the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to create 6GW of data centre capacity by the year 2029.

Data centres are actual buildings that house the computing and networking equipment that organizations use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.

They feature hosting servers, memory systems and connectivity devices like routers and firewalls, combined with the essential electricity and temperature control systems to function properly.

Funding Benefits

Across Andhra Pradesh, the government has been providing discounted land and electricity to draw worldwide funders.

Sector Expansion

The nation's data center sector has grown rapidly in the recent half-decade, exceeding the 1GW capability milestone in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 capacity.
