Ex- FBI director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.
Mr Comey's attorney submitted the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the proceedings terminated for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
Mr Comey was indicted just days after the former president pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.
At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they aimed to file multiple legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a court case, arguing the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to take over the proceedings.
James Comey's case was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under influence from Trump after his probe into another political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
The former director appeared in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.
Upon hearing to the magistrate recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he grasped the charges.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the court.
James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the time, the director was leading an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the presidential campaign.
During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.
The federal government claim James Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not approved a person at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Via social media James Comey posted to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was not guilty and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".
"We have understood for considerable time that there are costs to opposing the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against Mr Comey emerged after the former president shared on social media calling for his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and additional individuals.
