An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made cars.
He stated that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
The broader defence environment underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport usage to communication practices.
