‘He was brought back from the edge’: Chevy Chase endured eight days in a medically induced coma during the pandemic.

Chevy Chase endured a “potentially fatal” cardiac event that resulted in him being placed in an medically induced coma during the pandemic, per details from a new film about the entertainment icon.

The film, titled I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the legend of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars on two occasions, was hospitalized for five full weeks in the medical facility.

“There was a problem, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we headed to the ER. His heart stops. During those years he was drinking, he developed cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they are unable to pump as much blood out with each beat.”

Medical professionals then put him into a state of unconsciousness for over a week, before warning his child, his daughter: “He may not recover. We don’t know how aware he’ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.”

“After regaining consciousness, all he was able to do was use his voice,” she added. “He has basically come back from the dead.”

The actor personally has revealed that he has suffered memory problems since his hospitalisation, and in the project he cannot remember some of his past on-set and backstage disputes, including a fight with Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live backstage area.

Chase said he was “disappointed” by his omission from the 50th anniversary special of SNL this year, at which he was in the crowd but not participating.

“Honestly, it was quite upsetting,” he said. “This is probably the first time I’m saying it. But I assumed that I could have been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman were called up, I was curious as to why I was not. I wasn't invited. Why was I excluded?”

Chase, 82, almost died in 1980 when he was electrocuted on the set of Modern Problems, an incident which triggered a period of depression.
