British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
